matchup: Jake Peavy (3-0, 2.13 ERA) vs Brandon Webb (1-1, 4.00 ERA)

Don't think of this as home away from home. Think of it as that really crappy apartment you lived in when you got out of college. Go Padres!

Good job Geoff, way to RR the blog.

You had me a little concerned at work today, since I thought my job was suddenly blocking the site.

Man, I thought work block ducksnorts as well! What I did notice was that the error message mentioned geoffreynyoung.com, which led me to mentalshrapnel.geoffreynyoung.com Geoff, I had no idea you had a personal blog.

Thanks, guys; we do what we can. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. Meanwhile, we've got a great matchup tonight!

Yeah, it should be a great game. What's Peavy v. Webb lifetime?

6:38 PM
Blogger Kevin Brewer said...

Webb owns the Padres, and Peavy doesn't far well against the Diamondbacks.

6:41 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought the lifetime Webb stats against the Pads were more losses than wins.

I ran numbers in the actual IGD that nobody can see. Current D'backs are hitting .179/.228/.327 against Peavy in 168 AB. Current Padres are hitting .252/.313/.380 against Webb in 242 AB. Branyan and Cruz have done real well against Webb, and I'm a little surprised that at least one of them isn't in the lineup.

Right, current players, but how has each pitcher done against the other team?

6:48 PM

KT said on the morning show they would "protect Kousz" today against Webb and that they would wait until JUNE OR JULY to evaluate his performance. He's playing. Let's hope the second comment is also rethought.

6:52 PM
Blogger Kevin Brewer said...

I don't think that thought is that bad in Kouzmanoff.

6:53 PM

You want to make a conclusion on Kouz now, on the basis of 49 ABs?

Jake is a stud. Way to run yourselves out of the inning D'backs.

After 1st inning ...

Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 16-13; B Webb 8-5.

Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 1-0; B Webb 3-0.

Batters faced - J Peavy 4; B Webb 3.

I think that waiting until June or July to evaluate Kouz is a smart idea.

Wow, after what Peavy did to them last time at the plate, you wouldn't think they'd want to pitch to him. Maybe they want him to get a hit so he runs the bases and wears himself out.

Hopefully we can stay true to the stat of us being 9-0 when we score first.

Why would anyone bat Cameron second?

7:10 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Re: Cameron hitting second

Because he doesn't hit a lot of ground balls, and when he does he's fast enough to beat out a double play. That's important against someone like Webb; he won't kill an inning that NOG leads off by reaching base. But it still seems strange to put his power there.

7:13 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ouch, nice bottom of 2nd for Jake!

Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 32-23; B Webb 31-18.

Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 1-0; B Webb 6-0.

Batters faced - J Peavy 7; B Webb 9.

ps. Camy threw out OHudson @ 3B in 1st? Anybody watching that can describe?

LM

7:14 PM
Blogger Kevin Brewer said...

Well, he has no power or hitting right now. I wouldn't put him higher than No. 7.

7:14 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jake made some of them babybacks look pretty weak.

7:15 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

LM:

Hard ground ball to Cameron had runner on 1st go to 2nd. As a precaution, Cameron threw to Kouz at 3rd, who bobbled. Hudson (at 2nd) thought he could get 3rd. Jake was backing up the play and Kouz nailed Hudson dead to rights. He even messed up his neck sliding into Jake's knees.

7:16 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pujols is hitting poorly too. Should the Cardinals bat him 7th? Mike Cameron has a proven track record of having power; 60 at bats this season don't prove or disprove anything about his ability to hit.

7:17 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Top of 3rd didn't take long ... may have to make 1 run stand up?

LM

7:18 PM

Just finished eating dinner. Peavy threw some real nasty sliders in the third; nice to see him finish guys off after he got ahead. Also, great at-bat by Kouz. Very encouraging...

7:20 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pujols is around .800 OPS ... MCamy around .550 ... that's not a valid comp ... yes, after 60 ABs I think it's fair to say that the lineup would be better with him lower in it ... when he starts to warm up, he can/will move back up ...

But clearly Bud is on your side ... I/we just disagree ... right now, MCamy's an out-machine ... and the #2 spot just makes that more expensive ...

- C. Young struck out swinging

After 3 full ...

Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 1-0; B Webb 7-1.

Batters faced - J Peavy 10; B Webb 12.

In his last 5 games, Cameron has an .876 OPS. The problem with adjusting batting order based on who's hot/who's not is that it's very difficult to tell which is which in the small sample sizes you have to deal with.

ben b - well said ... and obviously "look & feel" are important ... I think what you're hearing from me is a just frustration at how many outs he's made this season ... and letting his defensive problems impinge on my judgement also ... but he still doesn't seem like a good #2 hitter ... ever ...

What a horrible call on that checked swing. I'm shocked. Jake was just laughing when they 1st base umpire called it no swing. "If he hits it it's a double."

7:58 PM

Sorry, guys, but I agree with the ump. It didn't look like a swing to me.

7:58 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yeah, that was a brutal call. Matt and Mud suggested it might be to make up for the called strike the previous inning.

Score is 2-0 in the 5th, no clue on the metaphor...

7:59 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sledge seems to have trouble hearing out there in left. That's about 4 times I can think of that he's run into somebody in the field.

Cameron's got a right to be upset. He has some unfortunate memories of running into another outfielder.

In Sledge's defense, that ball was hit right to him and Cameron ranged all the way over and caught it. Shows he doesn't have any flashbacks from two years ago I guess.

Thru 5.5 ...

Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 89-57; B Webb 83-55.

Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 1-1; B Webb 11-2.

Batters faced - J Peavy 18; B Webb 24.

Is Jake done now, or can he go one more?

8:21 PM

I'd certainly send him out there for another inning. I think his cap should be about 120 to 125 pitches. Don't think that should be too many.

8:24 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thru 6 ...

Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 105-67; B Webb 83-55.

Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 1-2; B Webb 11-2.

Batters faced - J Peavy 22; B Webb 24.

... I vote Jake to be done for the night.

Batters faced - J Peavy 25; B Webb 27.

If only his pitch count were lower, he would have a really good chance to reach 20. But no way we want him throwing 150 pitches to do that.

Where's Matt Bush tonight?

9:07 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I want to elaborate - The Padres, several years ago, chose Matt Bush with the first overall pick in the draft, over the consensus #1, Stephen Drew. Not that the pick hasn't bitten the Padres in the ass already, but tonight was the proverbial bite in the ass to a team that drafted based on signability factors over talent.

9:09 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually, and iirc, I think the alternative they were considering was Jered Weaver ... which isn't much less of a bite-in-the-ass ... perhaps it's even more ... but just not as stingy right now ... to me, anyway ... :-(

re: Hoffy BS ... (side note: BS is nice abbreviation for "blown save", ain't it :-) ...

Don't you half-expect that to happen every time Hoffy comes out and tries to throw 83-85 mph fast balls at major league hitters?

Sure, the results speak for themselves, but for about 5 years now, I'm almost more surprised when he gets guys out than when he serves up diggers like this tonight ...

Don't get me wrong, he's the best of all time ... and he's OBVIOUSLY still VERY GOOD ... he gets A LOT of guys out ... I'm just not sure how/why ... do you understand it?

GY ... can you explain how/why a guy with an 83-85 mph fastball is so successful?

Ouch, ouch, ouch. I don't think Chad Tracy deserved to be on with his walk; the ump could not decide whether where the corner was. I did not see the whole game, so would have to see how consistently he did or did not give it, but if he did give it, and tightened vs. Trevor, that blows.

Our management wanted to sign Drew or other top players, but Moores said no to the expected money. I think Moores has seen what happened to that and is not going to do that again.
